Hematite Mineralized Bacterial Remnants: Implications for Martian Hematite

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The 2.0 Ga iron-bearing Gunflint Formation was deposited during a transitionary period in Earth history when a stable oxic atmosphere was being established. The Animikie Group, which comprises both the Rove and Gunflint Formations, extends NE-SW for approximately 175 km from Thunder Bay, Ontario to northern Minnesota [1]. The thickness of the Gunflint ranges from 100 to 180 m, with an average thickness of about 122 m [2]. Metamorphism of the Gunflint Formation increases gradationally from east to west. These rocks are essentially undeformed and exhibit a low metamorphic grade ranging from diagenetic to subgreenschist, with maximum temperatures that ranged from 120 to 150 degrees C [3].

Fresnel modeling of hematite crystal surfaces and application to martian hematite spherules
The gray crystalline hematite at Meridiani Planum first discovered by the Mars Global Surveyor Thermal Emission Spectrometer (MGS-TES) instrument occurs as spherules that have been interpreted as concretions. Analysis of the TES and mini-TES spectra shows that no 390 cm−1 feature is present in the characteristic martian hematite spectrum. Here, we incorporate the mid-IR optical constants of hem...
متن کاملCharacterization of the Effects of Precursor Mineralogy on Hematite Spectra: Application to Martian Hematite Mineralization
Introduction. The Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) instrument aboard Mars Global Surveyor discovered several isolated deposits of gray, crystalline hematite in Sinus Meridiani, Aram Chaos, and Valles Marineris. A variety of formation mechanisms has been proposed for the martian hematite deposits [1-5], including aqueous and nonaqueous processes. Comparison of the average Sinus Meridiani hema...
متن کاملSnot, Sticks, and Lots of Water: Iron Microbes as Minimalist Architects
Introduction: Substantial iron accumulation on the Earth’s surface can in many instances be attributed either directly or indirectly to microbial activity. Microbial mat deposits in various periods of Earth history were iron-mineralized to various degrees and may also contain remains of the organisms that formed them [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. The common association of microbes and iron accumulations on ...
متن کاملHydrothermal jarosite and hematite in a pyroxene-hosted melt inclusion in martian meteorite Miller Range (MIL) 03346: Implications for magmatic-hydrothermal fluids on Mars
Low-temperature aqueous processes have been implicated in the generation of jarosite and hematite on the martian surface, but little is known regarding the role that high-temperature magmatic fluids may have played in producing similar assemblages on Mars. We have identified jarosite and hematite in a clinopyroxene-hosted melt inclusion in martian meteorite MIL 03346 that shows evidence of havi...
متن کاملJMSS-1: a new Martian soil simulant
It is important to develop Martian soil simulants that can be used in Mars exploration programs and Mars research. A new Martian soil simulant, called Jining Martian Soil Simulant (JMSS-1), was developed at the Lunar and Planetary Science Research Center at the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The raw materials of JMSS-1 are Jining basalt and Fe oxides (magnetite and hema...
